Parents -Thank you for coming to Parent - Teacher conferences. It was so nice to see everyone. If you did not receive a copy of the school wide reading book, please let me know.
In the classroom... Math- We are just about to wrap up our unit on double digit multiplication. Students should be able to solve a problem like this: 38 x 29. We will take the unit 4 math assessment on Monday, November 14th. If students have access to a computer and the internet, I have assigned topic 4 online assessment on Pearson as practice (they know the login). If not please use the sheets I shared with you at P-T Conferences for review. Most of the questions have 2 or more steps. This is a challenging test and may take two days to complete. Reading - Just a reminder that are expected to read 60 minutes each week. Please initial each time they read on their monthly sheet. Students are also expected to take a quiz on at least 6 books each quarter. Writing - This quarter we are writing an opinion essay. Students are creating a thesis statement and supporting it with three details. Social Studies - We are learning about Missouri's History through the famous expedition that Lewis and Clark led in 1803. Science - Next, we will be learning about Rocks and Minerals and taking a quick field trip to our local Conco Quarry. Throughout the month of October, Miss Feagan (our student teacher) will be teaching all subjects. If you have any questions or concerns please email me at anytime.
Please send after school transportation changes through email or phone messages. I am not always able to check class dojo in time to rely on it for changes in after school plans. End of 1st Quarter----------------------------------------- It hardly seems possible that we are wrapping up the 1st quarter. We have worked extremely hard and are ready to celebrate. Reading Counts Celebration was on Friday, Oct. 14th. Students who completed their 6 books and passed the quizzes enjoyed a movie and refreshments to celebrate. Those that did not continued working on their goals. RC Quizzes are required and students will be expected to complete the requirements of each quarter. Students have plenty of class time to meet their goals. Math- We are wrapping up Topic 3. This topic took our multiplication skills to a new level and will be assessed on Monday. Oct. 17th. Basic multiplication facts MUST be memorized at this point in the year. There are multiple resources here on the blog to practice this skill in a variety of ways. Social Studies- We have been looking at coordinate grid maps and the items that are found on a map. After the assessment, we will be moving onto Missouri Regions. Writing- We have been working on several narrative pieces this quarter. Students are learning how to use the techniques they admire in authors and put those same ideas into their own writing. Parent Teacher Conferences will be Nov. 1st and Nov. 3rd. I sent reminder slips home this week if you signed up at Meet the Teacher Night. Even if you haven't signed up, I reserved a date and time for you to approve. Please return these as soon as possible to ensure we are able to meet. I know your time is valuable, and I promise to honor the time I have reserved for you. There are several report card changes that I feel are important to highlight during our brief conference. If you have any questions or concerns, this is a perfect time to address those, as well. In the Classroom...
Math: We are learning (and reviewing) how to add and subtract whole numbers through the thousands place. For example: 4,085 + 2,193. Students are regrouping and borrowing. Students should also practice subtracting across zeros. For example: 3,000 - 1,675. (Parents can access math videos and worksheets at home, go to the math tab, Pearson link, and have your child share their username and login.) Writing: Students are finishing up their first 5 paragraph, personal narrative essay. They have worked hard on good beginnings and good endings. Soon, they will have a chance to peer edit and revise before they publish their essay. Science: We are wrapping up our unit on ecosystems. Last week, students worked together in teams to create a mural that represents specific ecosystems and presented them to our class! (See pictures on class dojo!) Reading: Last week, we finished all reading assessments and grouped students into similar groups for STAR reading rotations. Although, 4th graders do not have regular reading homework, please have your child set up a nightly reading routine. It is extremely helpful to have your child read aloud and discuss what they read with you. Please ask questions and dig deep into what they are reading. Students greatly benefit from parents/family members reading aloud as they follow along. STAR Reading Begins September 19th! Homework: Reading - 60 minutes each week. ***Remember students need to take and pass 6 book quizzes each quarter. In the classroom...
In math we are learning and reviewing place value to the millions place. A letter went home this week explaining what we are working on throughout this unit. Students should be able to write a number in standard form (245,691) expanded form (200,000+40,000+5,000+600+90+1) and number name (two hundred forty-five thousand, six hundred ninety- one). Today we rounded and compared numbers. In science, we are learning about the scientific process. We completed two science experiments and enjoyed a few gobstoppers in the process!! Please ask for the details. : ) You can see pictures on class dojo! In writing, we have been setting up our journals and language notebooks. Next week we will begin writing personal narratives. In reading, we are building stamina during reading to self. I started administering DRA's (reading assessment) this week. Hopefully, I will be able to finish them soon and will have all students' current reading levels! Please check out class dojo, I added a special note for each student! Have a great weekend! We have had a great first few days! We have learned routines, expectations and are getting to know each other.
Next week we will begin digging into 4th grade must knows: spelling, writing, reading strategies, and math basics. Highlights:
